Ingredients

Brownie Layer

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (113 g)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (200 g)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (30 g)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (60 g)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (85 g)

Cookie Layer

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (113 g)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed (110 g)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50 g)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (150 g)
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (170 g)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line an 8×8-inch (20×20 cm) baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In one bowl, whisk together the melted butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Stir in the cocoa powder, flour, salt, and chocolate chips until just combined.
  3. In a second bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar.
  4. Mix in the egg and vanilla, then stir in the flour, baking soda, salt, and chocolate chips until a thick cookie dough forms.
  5. Spread the brownie batter evenly into the prepared baking pan.
  6. Scoop large portions of the cookie dough over the brownie batter and gently spread them so most of the brownie layer is covered.
  7. Sprinkle a generous handful of additional chocolate chips evenly over the top.
  8. Bake for 35–40 minutes, until the cookie layer is golden brown and the center is just set.
  9. Let cool for about 20 minutes, then cut into thick squares and serve warm.
